New Landscape Makes a Yard Feel New Again

Understanding How Retaining Walls work

Retaining walls are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners and contractors due to their practical benefits and aesthetic appeal. These walls are commonly used in hilly and sloping areas to reinforce the soil and prevent soil erosion, landslides, and mudslides. If you're considering installing a retaining wall on your property, it's essential to understand how it works to get the most out of it.

Retaining Walls are Built to Support the Soil

Retaining walls serve a crucial purpose: to provide support for soil, especially in cases where the ground level differs from one side to the other. These structures ensure stability while maintaining the natural balance of the surrounding environment. The wall holds back the soil mass and keeps it in place. When constructed correctly, retaining walls can effectively resist soil pressure and maintain soil stability.

Types of Retaining Walls

There are mainly two types of retaining walls: gravity walls and reinforced walls. Gravity walls ingeniously utilize their own weight to proficiently endure and neutralize soil pressure, guaranteeing the utmost structural integrity. This simple yet clever design demonstrates remarkable effectiveness. These walls are usually made from concrete, rocks, or brick. Reinforced walls, on the other hand, rely on reinforcements such as steel bars, geogrids, or soil nails to resist soil pressure. Reinforced walls are usually used in areas with heavier loads, such as retaining soil in parking garages or bridge abutments.

The Importance of Adequate Drainage

Good drainage is critical when it comes to retaining walls. Without proper drainage, water can accumulate behind the wall and exert additional pressure, leading to structural failure. A drainage material, such as gravel or crushed rocks, should be placed behind the wall to allow water to drain slowly from the backfill.

Retaining Walls Add Value and Beauty to Your Property

Retaining walls can enhance the visual appeal of your outdoor space and create more usable areas. Retaining walls can be purposefully designed to harmonize with the style and architecture of your house, as well as the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless and visually appealing integration. Additionally, an attractive retaining wall can increase the resale value of your property.

Proper Installation of Retaining Walls

It's crucial to ensure that retaining walls are installed correctly to avoid structural problems later on. An experienced contractor can design and install the retaining wall according to your individual needs, soil characteristics, and weather conditions in your area. The contractor should also have sufficient knowledge of local regulations regarding retaining wall construction.

Retaining walls are useful structures that serve various purposes, from functional to decorative. When properly installed, a retaining wall can prevent soil erosion, provide usable outdoor spaces, and add value to your property. However, it's essential to understand how retaining walls work so that they can be constructed correctly. If you're considering the installation of a retaining wall, it is prudent to seek guidance from an experienced contractor. Their expertise and knowledge will ensure a successful and satisfactory outcome. Their expertise can assist you in designing and installing a durable wall that suits your requirements and stands the test of time. With proper planning, you can enjoy the aesthetic appeal and practical benefits of a retaining wall for years to come.

About Me

New Landscape Makes a Yard Feel New Again

Hi. My name is Martha. My husband Leo and I are empty nesters. The last of our three kids moved out of the home about eight years ago. Since that time, we have talked a great deal about retirement and what we wanted to do with our house. The house is slightly too large for just the two of us, but we already have two grandchildren and from the way our kids talk, we are in for plenty more. We have decided to stay in our home since it has plenty of room for our family to come and stay with us from time to time. The one thing we really wanted to change is the backyard. Leo retired last year, and I’ll be retiring in about six months. We are already talking with the landscape contractor, and I’m excited to share some of our plans with you!
